ND Mechanics

Sometimes the most confusing part of neurodivergence isn't what happens.

It's that what happens can seem inconsistent.

We can know exactly what we need to do and still struggle to begin. A routine can work beautifully until one day it doesn't. Something that seems simple may use far more capacity than expected, while something complicated can suddenly feel easy.

What changes when we stop asking only what the behavior looks like and start asking what might be happening underneath it?

Looking Beneath the Behavior

ND Mechanics explores what is happening underneath the visible behavior, so seemingly inconsistent experiences can become understandable patterns.

Instead of beginning with:

Why can't I just do this?

we can become curious about different questions:

What conditions are present?

What capacity is available right now?

What helps activation begin?

What happens when working memory reaches its limits?

What changes when the environment changes?

The behavior gives us something to notice.

The mechanics give us another layer to explore.

Understanding Changes What We Can Do

Once we begin recognizing mechanics, experiences that once seemed disconnected can start forming patterns.

Working memory, activation, nervous-system flow, environmental structure, sensitivity, movement, and the tools we use may interact in ways that become easier to recognize when we stop looking at each experience in isolation.

And sometimes that changes the question from:

How do I make myself do this?

to:

What does my system need in order for this to become possible?

That is a very different starting point.

Tools Are Part of the Mechanics

A tool may help, but the tool itself doesn't necessarily explain why it helps.

Sometimes the more useful question is:

What conditions did this tool create that allowed my nervous system to do something differently?

That distinction matters because a useful tool may change over time.

The principle remains stable. The tool remains replaceable. The nervous system performs the transformation.

Start With Something You Recognize

The posts gathered here explore individual pieces of these mechanics through lived experience, observation, and experimentation.

You don't need to understand an entire operating system at once.

Start with something you recognize.

Follow the pattern underneath it.

And stay curious about what your system may be showing you.
